The Brief
The Brief
Serving a newly renovated terrace with rear lane access, this very compact courtyard required a complete reconsideration. The existing, tired lawn and a lone fruit tree offered little value to the home. The challenge was to transform the limited footprint into a highly usable area that accommodates the owner's dog, establishes a lush, ornamental view from the living spaces, and introduces much-needed shade from the harsh afternoon westerly sun.

The challenge was to transform the limited footprint into a highly usable area that accommodates the owner's dog, establishes a lush, ornamental view from the living spaces, and introduces much-needed shade from the harsh afternoon westerly sun.
The Philosophy
The Philosophy
The design balances soft lawn area with a clean, light stone terrace that seamlessly extends the interior living floor plan outside. Crepe myrtles are strategically positioned to filter the intense afternoon heat, creating a delicate canopy that balances cooling shade with pockets of natural light. To introduce a clear sense of depth and structure, the new lawn area was levelled and defined by a step-down steel edge. The perimeter boundaries are softened with climbing plants and underplanting, ensuring that every square metre feels balanced, lush, and architecturally integrated while leaving the central floor clear and functional.
